Ecstasy (The Bacharach Years), music and lyrics by Tim Alexander
Quagmire started in 1991 by David Beach and Tim Alexander as a more traditional CD making type indie record label. We had no idea what we were doing (we still don’t), but there weren’t too many people who did. We just made it up as we went along. Sometime in 1993 our sole national distributor decided to go bankrupt. We had four albums out at the time and all of our inventory was locked up. We had nothing to sell and no money to make more. All we had was our digital masters. Now being an indie label just starting out with a limited budget wasn’t easy at the time. Especially trying to do it nationally. We had to get product to every key college radio station and every key store around those stations; and do it at a time when “alternative” and “college rock” was first going mainstream. Major labels pumped millions into marketing squeezing out ‘lil labels like us. First of all, our music wasn’t niche enough. It wasn’t some hairball sub-genre of death metal or house music, it was pretty much indie pop. But that wasn’t a thing. It wasn’t grunge, it wasn’t rock. It was, according to one program director at KFJC, “too slick for college radio.” In reality, Quagmire’s music was and is amazing, intense, weird, ironic, tight, big, tiny, slick, raw, and good. It’s not anything. It’s exactly what we want it to be.
So back to 1993. We had been online fucking around with this Internet thing for sometime. A few of us had jobs at places like Apple and IBM, and a couple of us worked in a coffee roaster where people who worked at places like Apple, IBM, Sun, and SGI, would hang out and drink mochas…
Ah hell… I’ll finish it later. Just know that Tim was the musical force behind the label. Quagmire released the first downloadable album in 1994. And did a bunch of other stuff. Then took a long time off putting records out, but never stopped recording. So we have dozens and dozens of albums to release.
More later.
Hugs.
